Hyundai Motor Manufacturing needed a training center to serve as the educational preparation facility in support of their recently built manufacturing plant in Montgomery. GS&P was retained by the State of Alabama to design the 70,000-square-foot facility and provide programming and construction administration services. We organized the building delivery into three separately bid packages to speed up the process, and prequalified contractors to ensure compatibility with the project requirements. The steel frame structure houses classrooms, administrative offices and manufacturing simulations that replicate the processes and equipment used in the plant.

The design solution was to create a functional, yet architecturally dynamic presence for Hyundai and the State of Alabama directly adjacent to the prominent site location along I-65. The low, flat geography of the site dictated a strong horizontal shape, which takes its form from a metal skin that reflects movement and light. The large rotating Hyundai logo and the curved entry wall enhance the horizontal forms of the building by varying the architectural expression of the metal skin with different metal panels, different colors and moving forms. The design successfully reflects the dynamic culture of Hyundai and serves as a public “front door” for the campus.
