Summer is the perfect time to head outside with a good book or take a long walk listening to your favorite podcast. Continuously seeking new information and different viewpoints is important for growth. We asked a few Gresham Smith employees to tell us what books or podcasts are on their lists this season—see what they had to say.

I recently ordered Lead From The Heart: Transformational Leadership for the 21st Century. It just came and I’m excited to start it! It’s a book that the Healthcare Corporation of America recommends all their design and construction teams read.

I’m loving the podcast 99% Invisible by Roman Mars. Also, the book How to use graphic design to sell things, explain things, make things look better, make people laugh, make people cry, and (every once in a while) change the world by Michael Bierut is an oldie but a goodie.

I’m reading two books. Making Transit FUN! by Darrin Nordahl illustrates how we can make transit as inviting as the automobile, with a focus on innovative design that enhances the passenger experience. The West Without Water by B. Lynn Ingram and Frances Malamud-Roam documents past droughts, floods and other natural disasters that have plagued the western United States and examines the implications of future climate change for the region.

The podcast I’ve been enjoying lately is Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. He and his partner, Monica Padman, interview actors, comedians and artists in Dax’s attic. It’s a great combination of casual and deep conversation about people’s lives and ultimately what it’s like to be human. I love learning more about the guests’ personal lives and about the ways different people deal with the struggles we all face. Armchair Expert has become popular in a very short amount of time, and it continues to get better and better!
