American Cast Iron Pipe Company (ACIPCO), founded in Birmingham, Alabama in 1905, is a manufacturer of ductile iron pipe, spiral-welded steel pipe, fire hydrants and valves for the waterworks industry, and electric-resistance-welded steel pipe for the oil and gas industry. Gresham Smith, as part of a design-build team with Brasfield & Gorrie, has supported the company’s growth with state-of-the-art designs for a new steel pipe finishing building and additions to the site’s steel pipe coating facility.

American Steel Pipe Finishing Building
Our team designed a steel pipe finishing facility on ACIPCO’s existing site in Birmingham. The 123,500-square-foot building doubled the company’s processing capabilities, helping them better serve oil and gas pipeline clients across North America. The building, which is more than 1,100 feet long, is made of conventional steel, which required deep steel pipe foundations. The facility houses finishing equipment, such as stencils, scanners and barcode readers, that employees use before sending products out the door.
The building’s observation platform runs the length of the building and ties into a two-story employee services building, where the company’s offices, break rooms and locker rooms are located. In addition to architectural and engineering services, our project team also provided site work for the project, including new paving, utilities and stormwater systems, as well as an extended railroad spur track for loading and unloading shipments.
