With a desire to reach out specifically to young families, Baptist Health tapped Gresham Smith to design a 26,000-square-foot, freestanding emergency department and ambulatory center with dedicated care for pediatric cases, one of only seven such freestanding facilities in Florida at the time. The campus is home to Wolfson Children’s Emergency Center and a full service Adult Emergency Center.

Optimizing Workflow While Enhancing Patient Comfort

Optimizing Workflow While Enhancing Patient Comfort

From the littlest patient to the staff members, our design considered the various end users. We worked closely with staff and the purchasing department in order to integrate their workflows and specific equipment needs in a comforting environment. Burnt orange accents flag points of interest, aid in wayfinding, and create a bold statement in front lobby. Blonde maple wood tones were paired with soft blue-gray colors, but we dialed up the color in kid zones. Selected furniture, finishes and lighting create a hospitality-like feel as well as inviting entry and waiting areas.
Considering the Community

Considering the Community

We considered local architecture and natural surroundings in order to preserve the character of the surrounding residential community and adjacent medical office building. Shaded pedestrian paths connect back to the neighborhood, and a covered walk connects the ED/ Diagnostic Center with the medical office building. We engaged the community throughout the design process via workshops and meetings with local leaders and community organizations.
A LEAN Design with Plans for the Future

A LEAN Design with Plans for the Future

Clinical processes designed with LEAN principles incorporate multiple, adaptable patient pathways to increase the department’s functional longevity. The campus masterplan and design also account for anticipated growth with provisions for expansion, the addition of ambulatory surgery, and ultimately the construction of a full community hospital. The master plan allows for the ambulatory center – which we designed to hospital codes – to become part of a future hospital of approximately 100 beds as the emergency, imaging and diagnostic departments.
