To support the construction of a new water treatment plant, Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources had to devise a solution to transfer water to large distribution pipes located 3 miles away. Gresham Smith’s answer involved approximately 16,500 linear feet of 60-inch pipeline that transferred water from the Shoal Creek Water Treatment Plant to two 48-inch distribution mains located on each side of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

No Easy Route

No Easy Route

Bridging those 3 miles was no easy feat. The route was constrained by multiple factors, including surrounding neighborhoods, wetlands, existing utilities, a landfill and three major water crossings. The project also required extensive coordination with multiple ongoing projects and developments, including a proposed subdivision, a future 72-inch reuse water main, the widening of Sycamore Road and the replacement of the Richland Creek Bridge.
A Reliable Way to Convey

A Reliable Way to Convey

Incorporating steel and ductile iron pipe alternatives, our team’s easy-to-construct design solution avoided complications along the constricted 3-mile site, and perhaps most importantly, delivered a safe and reliable water transmission main that was completed on time and within budget.
