Large Diameter PCCP Water Main in Historic Cincinnati

Gresham Smith Vice President Katie Nolan, P.E., and Senior Technician Jeff Strobl

When FC Cincinnati joined Major League Soccer in 2019, the Team needed a new home; consequently, on December 18, 2018 construction officially began on the West End Stadium at the site of the former Taft Information Technology High School’s Stargel Stadium. A project of this magnitude in a fully developed urban area significantly impacts above and below ground infrastructure including the water distribution system. This presentation will provide unique insights pertaining to the design of large diameter prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) in a historic and highly urbanized setting. In addition to addressing solutions to technical challenges, there will be brief mention of the compressed design/construction schedule that required project completion (from design through construction) in nine months.
