Integration Challenges: ATMS and Software Video Aggregation

Monday, October 8 at 4:00 p.m. ET

Presentation by Senior TSMO Specialist Kendra McCoy

This presentation will provide an overview of the various challenges encountered while integrating ATMS and Video Aggregation Software. McCoy will first highlight challenges teams face during software development before covering the hurdles they may face when integrating the software. She will wrap up the presentation by sharing best practices and lessons learned for successful outcomes.

Utilizing Smart Work Zones to Improve Mobility: A Case Study of the I-20/59 SWZ in Tuscaloosa Alabama

Monday, October 8 at 4:00 p.m. ET

Presentation by Senior Transportation Engineer Laura Hartley, P.E., PTOE

In conjunction with the I-20/I-59 roadway widening project, currently underway in Tuscaloosa, AL, the Alabama Department of Transportation deployed its first Smart Work Zone System. The construction project began in January 2018. It will widen I-20/I-59 from Exit 71 to 77 and is anticipated to take three years. Over the past several months, the SWZ system has been active, and while there have been several challenges, there have also been observed rewards of the system. The presentation will offer a case study of the Smart Work Zone deployment, covering what is included in the system, the challenges faced and the benefits of the Smart Work Zone.

The Blackbox: A Look at Machine Learning Algorithms and Their Use in the Transportation Industry

Tuesday, October 9 at 10:30 a.m. ET

Presentation by Senior Transportation Engineer Meredith Cebelak, Ph.D., P.E.

The transportation industry has been trying to understand and better respond to the transportation network through the deployment of sensors for decades. Advancements in technology now allow for the collection of data in a greater magnitude and have created a need for advanced methods to better understand what is currently happening on our networks and potentially predicting future conditions.

Dr. Meredith Cebelak will provide a glance into machine learning by explaining the different types of learning algorithms. The presentation will discuss supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning techniques. Examples of each technique will be given using graphical representations as applicable, and examined to provide attendees a look at the capabilities of each. Finally, applications and examples of machine learning being used within transportation today will be covered.
