Sensory Environments for Behavioral Health: Diffusion of Environmental Innovation within the Veterans Health System

Presented by Gresham Smith Healthcare Director of Research and Innovation Lesa Lorusso, Ph.D., MBA, MSArch, NCIDQ, Veterans Health System Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center Director Ron Shorr, M.D., M.S., University of Florida Assistant Professor Sheila Bosch, Ph.D., EDAC, LEED AP, University of Florida Associate Professor Nam-Kyu Park, Ph.D., LEED, NCIDQ

Diffusing environmental innovations within complex healthcare organizations like the Veterans Health System requires strong collaboration between designers, researchers, and medical staff. As part of an innovation initiative, the Veterans Health System has provided behavioral health therapy in the form of multisensory environments nationwide since 2010. During this study, the research team gathered critical data from medical staff to improve future designs of multisensory environments at the VA.

During this presentation, attendees will learn how to:
• Define the concept and design elements of multisensory environments and how they have been applied at the VA.
• Describe elements of the rapid qualitative inquiry method used to gather data to inform and evaluate design interventions.
• Identify the elements of the diffusion of innovations theory and how it can be practically applied to the design process.
• Develop strategies to implement qualitative analysis using the rapid qualitative inquiry method.
