Designing with Structural Glass

Presentation by Steven Ball, P.E., S.E., LEED AP

Structural engineers commonly design structures using steel, wood, masonry or concrete, and there are numerous design references and codes for using those building materials. However, there are many unique, creative, bold structures across the United States that use glass to support occupant and environmental loads. Unfortunately, limited U.S. design resources and standards are available for engineers designing with structural glass. During this presentation, Steven will discuss how glass is made, outline the material’s properties, and provide guidance on designing glass structures for compliance with U.S. standards.
