Gresham Smith is proud to announce that Clay Phillips, AIA, has joined the firm’s Nashville Healthcare studio as an architect. He brings over a decade of medical planning and design experience, as well as a keen understanding of regional and national healthcare trends. Phillips will use his experience to continue enhancing the quality of healthcare services Gresham Smith offers to clients, helping address current needs while preparing for future growth.

“Clay understands the unique planning challenges confronting our healthcare clients, and has a proven track record of turning information into key insights that lead to smart design solutions,” said Brent Hughes, Vice President and Nashville Healthcare Studio Leader at Gresham Smith. “His commitment to professional career development, his clients and his community aligns with our culture and we are very happy to welcome him to Gresham Smith.”

Phillips most recently served as lead medical planner at HOK, engaging directly with doctors, nurses and staff at Kaiser Permanente to create healthcare spaces that are efficient, safe and enjoyable. Prior to that, he was a medical planner at NBBJ, where he led client workshops, implemented virtual reality technology, and designed full scale models, which led to a new prototype for Alaska Native Medical Center’s ICU rooms.

“Having grown up in Nashville, I was familiar with Gresham Smith’s legacy in healthcare design and long-established client relationships. I’m excited to join this dynamic team and look forward to continuing to move the needle where it matters most, ultimately helping improve the health of our communities,” said Phillips.

As an industry advocate, Phillips is an active member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the AIA’s Academy of Architecture for Health. He is also involved with his alma mater, Clemson University, as an inaugural member of The Young Alumni initiative, a group that supports recent graduates with resources to start their careers. In addition to his Master of Architecture + Health from Clemson, Phillips is also earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee. When he’s not working, he enjoys playing golf, riding his road bike and camping, as well as spending time with his family.
