The awards program recognizes the best interior designs in Tennessee. IIDA TN also awarded Brenna Murphy, NCIDQ, IIDA, an interior designer in GS&P’s Corporate + Urban Design market, Member of the Year for the Nashville region. These awards were presented at the Composing Great Design Awards Gala on August 24.

“GS&P is pleased to support IIDA TN as part of our continued industry involvement. We are proud of Brenna Murphy, who is a tremendous asset to our team and IIDA TN and excited to share the Best Healthcare New Construction Award with our client, Kaiser Permanente,” commented Brent Hughes, AIA, NCARB, EDAC, LEED AP, division vice president, Gresham, Smith and Partners. “Kaiser Permanente understands the critical role that environment plays in making their members’ experiences positive and impactful. We are pleased that IIDA TN recognized Kaiser Permanente and GS&P’s commitment to enhancing human experience through design.”

G&SP designed the new facility to help Kaiser Permanente serve the southern quadrant of the Baltimore, MD area. The 25,000-square-foot replacement facility includes primary care, pediatrics, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, optometry, pharmacy, imaging, lab services and vision essentials. The identifiable and memorable design expresses warmth, comfort and quality of care.

“The North Arundel building has set a new standard for the quality of the architecture and interior design of our medical office buildings in the Mid-Atlantic region,” said Taj Brown, national facilities services, design manager, Kaiser Permanente. “Our goal was to create a space that was a benchmark for all other designs to beat – with a pretense to encourage ideas that are sexy, new and inventive. The final design is all of these things. We are excited to share this recognition for great design.”

The new medical office provides an atmosphere of total health, a cornerstone of Kaiser Permanente’s brand, which aims to ensure that occupants feel comfortable throughout their visit. The design supports this objective by bringing comfort through clarity. Color and graphics are integrated throughout the modern building, energizing and organizing the space. Large, custom graphics at each lobby floor are visible from the parking lot through the glass exterior, welcoming members into the facility. Entry portals, graphics, directional signage and color-coded walls denoting different functions result in clear wayfinding and circulation. A color gradient wall in the virtual circulations guides members to the correct level.

The IIDA TN Member of the Year Award is presented to individuals who have made special contributions to the profession of Interior Design. Brenna Murphy was selected for her commitment to IIDA TN, her volunteerism and her involvement in sustainability initiatives at GS&P. In addition to her efforts at IIDA, Murphy mentors Tennessee college students. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design from the University of Kentucky.

GS&P’s dedicated Healthcare staff approach each project through the lens of Value-Added Design. Value-Added Design is a dynamic, holistic framework in which teams explore and define what is important to clients with a focus on key performance indicators: patient safety; operational efficiencies; integration of technology; adaptability/resiliency; healthy, sustainable buildings; and human experience through evidence-based design. This approach gives clients the opportunity to assess and prepare for inevitable market shifts.
