Gresham, Smith and Partners is proud to announce that the firm recently won a Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Kentucky Chapter for the J.D. Nichols Campus for Innovation & Entrepreneurship Plaza. In collaboration with prime consultant Booker Design Collaborative and NTS Development, GS&P served as the civil engineering sub-consultant on the project. The park-like urban infill space creates a pedestrian connection from Floyd Street to South Preston Street, between Market Street and Jefferson Street, transforming a blank courtyard into an urban oasis and providing a fun place for visitors to gather, eat, relax and be entertained. The award was presented at the Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) gala on March 29.

“GS&P is very proud to be recognized by our industry peers in Kentucky for the work we did at J.D. Nichols Campus,” commented Jon Henney, AICP, ASLA, senior land planner at Gresham, Smith and Partners. “It was truly a team effort with Booker Design Collaborative and NTS Development, as we strived to address the needs of all parties involved in the project. We believe this vibrant space offers both function and aesthetic, creating a much-needed respite for downtown workers and tourist and adding value to the campus. I’m confident the plaza will serve the community well for many years to come.”

The project’s design includes user-friendly features such as outdoor ping-pong tables, concrete cornhole games, bistro and picnic tables, bike racks, sustainable LED lighting and striking landscaping. Site drainage flows into an existing stormwater BMP which helps reduce the impact to the surrounding combined sewer system. The project was constructed between an existing office building and parking garage, with two future office buildings planned, requiring a complex grading/spot elevation design so the plaza remained accessible while accommodating all outdoor amenities programmed into the space.
