Gresham, Smith and Partners is proud to announce that the firm’s design for the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at Naples took home the top honor in the Ambulatory Surgery Center category of the International Interior Design Association’s (IIDA) 6th annual IIDA Healthcare Interior Design Competition. The project was recognized for outstanding originality and excellence in the design and furnishings of the interior space.

“We designed the eye institute to reflect Bascom Palmer’s commitment to using the latest technology and forward-thinking treatments to protect and preserve every patient’s sight,” said Luis J. Cano, AIA, principal and senior vice president at Gresham, Smith and Partners. “By working closely with Julio Ripoll, an ophthalmology design expert, the ophthalmologists who work at BPEI and keeping the patient-experience at the forefront of the design process, we were able to deliver a modern, cutting-edge facility that will serve the organization’s growing patient population for many years to come. Congratulations to our interior design team on this well-deserved recognition.”

“With research illustrating the link between design and positive patient outcomes, designers are making a tremendous impact on the healthcare industry,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, LEED AP. “This year’s winners of the Healthcare Interior Design Competition reflect the ever-evolving and healing nature of healthcare design.”

The patient care and ambulatory surgery center, which opened in 2015, serves as the flagship location on the Gulf Coast for Bascom Palmer’s internationally recognized ophthalmology practice. The state-of-the-art center has clinical space for the treatment of nearly every known eye disease, including 20 standardized exam rooms and eye lanes, an imaging suite, physician offices, an optical lab and a full surgical suite with two operating rooms and associated preparation and recovery areas.

The design’s eye-catching aesthetic embraces the spirit of optic science by showcasing light, as transparent glass paneling on the exterior allows natural light to fill the interior spaces and a cantilevered patient drop-off area provides shade for the main lobby’s glass-enclosed two-story atrium. The lobby also features a custom sculptural pendant lighting fixture inspired by the shape of an eye. The interior design team also focused on seating, furnishings, indoor climate control and accessibility.

In addition to the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at Naples, GS&P also designed the Bascom Palmer Eye Clinic Abu Dhabi, a 70,000 square-foot freestanding ambulatory care center that brings world-class care to the United Arab Emirates.

“We designed the eye institute to reflect Bascom Palmer’s commitment to using the latest technology and forward-thinking treatments to protect and preserve every patient’s sight. Congratulations to our interior design team on this well-deserved recognition.”
