Gresham, Smith and Partners is proud to announce that the firm won a National Recognition Award in the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) 2017 Engineering Excellence Awards competition. The winning project is the I-40 Fast Fix 8 Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) project for the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) in Nashville, Tenn. It encompassed the major rehabilitation of four pairs of mainline I-40 bridges spanning Charlotte Avenue, Jo Johnston Avenue, Clinton Street, Herman Street and active CSXT and NWRR railroad tracks, and was delivered in 10 weekend-only closures. GS&P was presented with the award during ACEC’s 50th Anniversary Engineering Excellence Awards Gala on April 25 in Washington, D.C.

“Fast Fix 8 was completed in October 2015 but continues to garner accolades within the engineering field,” said Ted Kniazewycz, P.E., senior transportation engineer at Gresham, Smith and Partners. “It’s a tremendous honor for Fast Fix 8 to be recognized on the national level at ACEC’s 50th anniversary gala, during the year that GS&P is also celebrating our 50th anniversary. We hope that our engineering work has positively impacted our community these years we’ve been in business, and we look forward to many more years of successful projects in the future.”

GS&P was the design engineering firm for Fast Fix 8, providing in-house expertise including comprehensive site investigation, structural analysis and design, preparation of detailed roadway and bridge construction plans, technical assistance and research, and comprehensive traffic management plans. The team deployed an array of rehabilitation methods including full-depth pre-stressed concrete deck panels, prefabricated superstructure deck units, and span elimination with earth-retaining structures. Additionally, precast substructure elements were utilized to facilitate the reconstruction of these eight bridges in the expedited 10 weekend-only closure period. The project also included milling and resurfacing the mainline segment of I-40 along with incidental grading, drainage, lighting, and ITS modifications.

GS&P took home the Grand Iris Award for Fast Fix 8 in ACEC of Tennessee’s 2016 Engineering Excellence Awards competition. The project has also been featured in numerous engineering publications and at conferences and webinars across the country.
