BOE Chengdu Hospital to be Designed by Gresham Smith

Gresham Smith announces the firm’s recent contract with BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd., to plan and design BOE Chengdu Hospital. The digital hospital is the third and largest hospital being developed by BOE’s health services team and plays a critical role in expanding and establishing BOE’s health service system. The medical campus will leverage BOE’s expertise in display and sensor technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) and big data to drive advanced medical care and research.

Kim, AIA, design principal, Gresham Smith. “The large new medical campus will foster collaboration amongst clinicians, researchers and educators while establishing an exceptional healing environment.”

BOE expects around 6,000 outpatient and 600 emergency visits each day necessitating smart planning and efficient organization. Gresham Smith’s design considers patient safety, privacy, experience and access to staff as well as staff satisfaction, efficiency and collaboration to support enhanced patient outcomes. Rather than a traditional model organized around outpatient, inpatient and diagnostics and treatment, BOE Chengdu Hospital will be organized around disease type and specialties with decentralized support services for ease of patient access and better medical outcomes.

The phased project consist of about 7,400,000 square feet (688,500 square meters) including a phase I 2,000-bed hospital, proton center and research center comprised of about 3,960,000 square feet (368,000 square meters) and 3,450,000-square-foot (320,500 square meters) phase II 1,500-bed specialty hospital. The hospital will feature a general hospital, cancer center, women’s and children’s center, a geriatric center, heart and vascular center and neuroscience center. The research center will focus on AI, genetics and digital medicine and devices. The firm is providing master planning, architecture and interior design services for the campus. Construction is anticipated to begin January 2019.
