Eastern Parkway Transportation Plan Honored with ITE Special Projects Award

Gresham Smith announces that the Eastern Parkway Transportation Plan was selected for the Southern District Institute of Transportation Engineers (SDITE) Special Projects Award in the Complete Streets category. The awards program recognizes outstanding transportation engineering and planning projects in the southeast region.

The plan re-imagines, preserves and embraces Louisville’s interconnected parks and parkways system, originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. in the 1890s. Selected by the Louisville Metro Government to study the parkway, Gresham Smith delivered a transportation plan that addresses future needs with a focus on traffic flow, aesthetics and multimodal access.

Designed to fit the needs and mobility of all users, the plan was recognized in the Complete Streets category and meets modern goals for a safe and effective parkway. Beyond a simple site visit, the project team captured real-time stress data and used human scale evaluation of the balance between all aspects of transportation and the surrounding environment in the 3.35-mile Eastern Parkway stretch.

“Our Eastern Parkway plan recommends widespread improvements to Louisville’s social and environmental health, while aligning with the original Olmsted design aesthetic,” says Katie Rowe, P.E., AICP, transportation planner and engineer at Gresham Smith. “We are honored that our innovative approach to the plan was recognized by the SDITE and that future generations will once again enjoy the parkway as the original designers intended.”
