Gresham, Smith and Partners announces that Principal Eddy Alonso, AIA, Lean, and Senior Vice President Marc Sauvé, Lean, presented at the 28th Annual Health Facility Institute Symposium on May 1 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The duo shared strategies for developing primary care clinics through a case study on GS&P-designed Whitaker Primary Care Clinic at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

“The Whitaker Primary Care Clinic project for the University of Alabama at Birmingham and The University of Alabama Health Services Foundation serves as a great case study on adaptive reuse of an existing building,” commented Sauvé. “The design was flexible, which facilitated greater staff collaboration and efficiency. I enjoyed sharing the lessons we learned on the Whitaker project and discussing the trends that are driving health facility development.”

They Grow Up So Fast: Raising Primary Care Clinics from Conception to Adulthood
Presentation by Eddy Alonso, AIA, Lean, and Marc Sauvé, Lean

As the pace of healthcare transformation accelerates, a facility designed for today’s practice model must get to market faster and have the flexibility to adapt as practices evolve throughout the facility’s useful life. Using a primary care clinic designed for the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a key example, Alonso and Sauvé shared insights into overcoming the challenge of planning for the unknown, designing facilities to achieve future goals while meeting today’s practice needs, and expediting construction with BIM modeling and prefabrication. From system-wide and facility-specific strategic planning to applying Lean strategies to streamline clinical and operational processes, the presenters addressed the core challenges to, and solutions for, planning, designing, renovating and managing change at resilient healthcare facilities.
