FLL Supports Growth with Gresham-Smith Designed Terminal 2 Expansion

Gresham Smith’s design for an expansion and renovation of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport’s (FLL) Terminal 2 is taking shape. Construction partner Turner Construction Company has completed framing for the new structural supports. To address the airport’s dramatic growth, this project will increase overall building capacity, improving passenger flow and enhancing the customer experience.

“The Terminal 2 modernization presents an exciting challenge in terms of architecture, engineering and program management,” said Ben Goebel, AIA, principal, Gresham Smith “To provide the clerestory and mezzanine, we are upgrading the entire structure. To provide an open and welcoming airside court, we are updating some of the most critical elements of the building, but doing so while it is still open and being utilized by passengers.”

As part of FLL’s Terminal Modernization Program, the Terminal 2 improvements will relocate and expand the security checkpoint, hold rooms, restrooms and airside concessions. The building expansion will create a multistory space featuring a mezzanine and clerestory windows that will provide an open, more modern feel. The project includes an all-new Delta Sky Club on the mezzanine level.

The updates required creative structural engineering solutions to accommodate vertical expansion ultimately creating an open, high-impact space. Terminal 2 is expected to achieve LEED Silver certification through the use of local materials, system upgrades and other sustainability measures.

Gresham Smith is providing programming, planning, architecture, interior design, project management, structural engineering and environmental graphics and wayfinding services for the Terminal 2 modernization. The firm is providing a wide range of professional services at FLL’s four terminals as part of the airport’s Terminal Modernization Program as well as complete signage overhaul driven by a wayfinding master plan. New overhead roadway and curbside signage is anticipated to be completed by Spring 2020.
