Seasoned project manager, roadway and drainage engineer Carl Spirio, P.E., CPM, has joined Gresham Smith as Central Florida Design Group Leader in Transportation.

Spirio brings more than 30 years of experience in management and design in both the public and private sectors. Prior to joining Gresham Smith, Spirio was responsible for developing drainage policy and procedures for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) as State Drainage Engineer. He brings extensive design experience in stormwater conveyance and management, bridge hydraulics modeling, coastal protection, watershed and flood modeling and stormwater/environmental permitting.

“Carl is the perfect candidate to grow our transportation design services in Central Florida,” said Tyler Strickland, P.E., J.D., RSP1, Florida State Transportation Leader at Gresham Smith. “He brings a wealth of experience to lead our Central Florida design group, and he will be a great mentor for our younger professionals.”

Spirio has spoken at a number of national and regional conferences, and he brings a number of industry relationships through his committee memberships. He has also been involved with a number of research panels for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, most recently with a team that is rewriting the entire American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Drainage Manual to include more current design issues involving sea level rise, climate change, one-water watershed planning and resource strategies.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering at the University of South Florida. He serves on the board of the Florida Stormwater Association. He lives in Valrico with his family, where he’s active with his church and youth sports leagues as a coach.
