Gresham Smith is proud to announce the completion of the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery at Healthcare Corporation of America’s (HCA) Florida West Tampa Hospital, a first-of-its-kind facility dedicated to surgical care and treatment of the endocrine glands, which include the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal. With a design that prioritizes the patient experience and staff satisfaction, the 75,000-square-foot, Gresham Smith-designed facility provides state-of-the-art inpatient and outpatient care in one convenient location.

“When designing the facility our team focused on creating a modern, technologically-advanced space that meets today’s operational needs while also providing flexibility for the future as treatment methods advance,” said Rob Hamby, AIA, EDAC, Project Executive at Gresham Smith. “We’re honored to have worked with HCA and the staff at West Tampa Hospital to create a facility that provides a one-of-a-kind patient experience and supports world-class surgeons in providing highly specialized care.”

The hospital’s modern exterior reflects the sophisticated, high-tech care patients can expect to receive inside and features wood-look metal panels, perforated metal screens and large expanses of windows. A glass canopy welcomes visitors into the main lobby, where the fixtures, finishes and furniture were inspired by Tampa’s lush landscape and vibrant plant life. Patients can check in at the centralized registration desk and wait in one of the lounge areas, or visit the adjacent dining space and outdoor patio.

Also located on the first floor, the pre- and post-surgery unit is home to 33 bays and a centralized nursing station demarcated by a wood ceiling feature and recessed lighting. The facility’s radiology, nuclear medicine, laboratory and pathology departments enable physicians to diagnose and treat endocrine tumors, and the eight operating rooms are equipped with the latest technology, such as video connectivity and robotic systems, to support surgeons performing advanced procedures. The third floor’s 15 private patient rooms create a calm, comforting environment that reduces patient stress. Updates to the existing elevator circulation and a new elevator in the center of the building create operational efficiencies while separating the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery patients from West Tampa Hospital’s other patient populations.

Gresham Smith provided architecture, interior design, experiential design and wayfinding services for the project, which is a continuation of the firm’s longstanding relationship with HCA. Gresham Smith previously designed HCA StoneSprings Hospital Center, HCA SkyRidge Medical Center, multiple projects at HCA Reston Hospital Center and HCA Summerville Medical Center. Additionally, the firm recently upgraded numerous HCA pharmacies to meet USP800 standards and provided commissioning services at HCA facilities across the country.
