Gresham Smith announces the completion of a 20,000-square-foot renovation and expansion to the women’s imaging center and obstetrics department at AdventHealth Gordon Hospital, a rural hospital in Calhoun, Georgia. Focusing on amenities that create a calm, spa-like environment for women, the new space provides comprehensive maternal care and diagnostics in one convenient location.

“From routine tests to welcoming a new baby, visiting the hospital can sometimes be an overwhelming experience. The new women’s imaging center and obstetrics department creates a welcoming environment that will lead to a more convenient, relaxing visit,” said Beth Hiltonen, NCIDQ, IIDA, LEED AP, senior interior designer at Gresham Smith. “In addition to enhancing the human experience, the expansion and renovation also increases operational efficiencies with centralized nurse stations and in-room monitors for doctor/patient communication. We located a nurse station in the nursery to shorten the distance between staff and babies and centralized diagnostic imaging for added convenience.”

The reimagined women’s center provides expanded imaging and diagnostic services and moves mammography, ultra-sound and dexa bone density testing to one location. It boasts a new, separate entrance and features a wall of windows and clerestory overlooking the hospital’s healing garden. Prioritizing the patient experience, the department supplies patients with robes, spa water, snacks and access to charging stations. The soothing interior features wood tones, natural stone and glass tiles while design details such as full wall graphics in ultrasound and mammography rooms provide pleasant distractions.

The expanded obstetrics department includes private labor and delivery and post-partum recovery (LDPR) suites. Each spacious LDPR room features a sleeper sofa with built-in work table and power outlet for visiting family members, as well as custom casework camouflaging murphy bassinets, medical gasses and clinical supplies. Additionally, private patient bathrooms have plenty of storage for toiletries and feature back-lit heated mirrors.

Gresham Smith was also responsible for civil engineering and landscape architecture on the site, integrating pink-toned flowers and rocks in the gardens for breast health awareness.

The firm was also tasked with providing wayfinding for the hospital at large to align with the AdventHealth brand. The team designed new signage for the women’s imaging center and obstetrics department, helping the space blend seamlessly with the intensive care unit, emergency department and medical/surgical suites, which were previously designed by Gresham Smith.
