Gresham Smith Completes Honeysuckle Road Corridor Study, Begins Phase I Design
Gresham Smith has been selected as the prime engineer for improvements to Honeysuckle Road between West Main Street and Fortner Street in Dothan, Ala. The firm is focused on mitigating traffic congestion by designing two additional lanes to the current three-lane road. Proposed improvements also include new bicycle and pedestrian facilities. These Phase I improvements are part of a three-pronged approach proposed by Gresham Smith, with additional phases including a roadway realignment and extension of the south end of Honeysuckle Road. The project follows an extensive Honeysuckle Road Corridor Study by Gresham Smith that analyzed traffic volume and offered recommended improvement alternatives.
“During our corridor study, we learned that an average of 14,000 vehicles travel on Honeysuckle Road every day,” said Jay Bockisch, P.E., PTOE, senior transportation engineer, Gresham Smith.“ Turning Honeysuckle into a five-lane roadway will really help alleviate congestion and better accommodate that significant amount of vehicles. Our goal is to make day-to-day life easier and safer for Dothan residents, and to do it in a smart, cost-effective way that makes the best use of local funds.”
The corridor study stretched from the intersection of West Main Street (US-84) and Honeysuckle Road to the intersection of Campbellton Highway and Taylor Road. In addition to traffic analysis and proposed improvement recommendations, the study also included preparation of concept designs, high-level environmental screening, and preliminary project cost estimates for the various alternatives. In addition to the roadway design for the Phase 1 improvements, Gresham Smith’s team is also responsible for surveying, utility relocation coordination and design, environmental due diligence and permitting, preparation of right of way acquisition documents, and right of way acquisition services.
