Gresham Smith-Designed Infusion Therapy Clinic at UAB Medicine’s Kirklin Clinic Recognized by IIDA Alabama Chapter
Gresham Smith is proud to announce that the firm’s interior design for the Infusion Therapy Clinic at UAB Medicine’s Kirklin Clinic was honored by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) of Alabama with the Best in Healthcare award. The project team accepted the award on Friday, Sept. 24 at the IIDA Alabama biennial awards program.
“With infusion treatments, including chemotherapy, patients can spend up to eight hours receiving treatment, so a warm, welcoming environment for patients and their families can go a long-way in reducing stress and providing comfort,” said Senior Interior Designer Erin McCullar, IIDA, LEED AP, EDAC. “Every design decision, from creating multiple infusion station options to maximizing natural light, was made to improve the patient experience. Our design was centered on giving patients control of their environment and creating a space that allows them to focus their energy on healing.”
The Infusion Therapy Clinic is a 23,500-square-foot-space that includes 84 patient stations, several nursing stations, and a private entrance/exit to the infusion lab and clinic. The interior design allows an abundance of natural light to flood both the waiting room and individual patient stations, and features a prime view of downtown Birmingham, Alabama. In addition, the simplicity of the bright, textural palette brings a sense of order and serenity to the experience, while color is used to identify nurse stations and guide patients to their destination.
The IIDA Alabama biennial awards ceremony honors members and local firms in the interior design profession who have completed projects within the previous two years. This year’s awards drew 82 submissions from 24 firms and furniture dealers, which were judged by a panel of professional peers. IIDA Alabama is the state’s association for the commercial interior design industry, providing resources to professionals and students in the industry and their clients to advance the profession and enhance business value.
