Gresham Smith-Designed Patient Tower at AdventHealth Waterman Completes
Gresham Smith is pleased to announce the completion of a new 111,000-square-foot four-story patient tower at AdventHealth Waterman. The addition expands the emergency department, relocates the OB and pediatric services and provides shell space for future medical and surgical units, growing the hospital’s beds from 269 to 287.

The new 38-bed emergency department is housed on the first floor and features a dedicated entrance to support intuitive wayfinding. When additional renovation work is complete, the emergency department will accommodate 58 beds. The tower’s second floor is dedicated to the Center for Women and Children and includes gynecology, labor and delivery, postpartum care and inpatient pediatrics. The pediatric exam and patient rooms incorporate an “Under the Sea” theme to connect to the AdventHealth network of care. The third floor, still under construction, will house a new service line, inpatient rehabilitation, and the fourth floor is shelled for future expansion with structural support for two additional future floors.
Gresham Smith provided pre-design and planning, architecture, interior design, experiential design and wayfinding, landscape architecture and civil engineering services for the project. The firm has designed several projects for the campus as well as published research on patient visibility and satisfaction for the orthopedic unit in The Journal of Environmental Psychology. Additionally, Gresham Smith is currently designing medical plazas in both Mount Dora and Tavares for AventHealth Waterman.
