Gresham Smith announces the firm has been selected as a sub-consultant on two new engineering projects for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)’s Districts 3 and 5. The projects, which are located in northwest and central Florida, will improve safety and traffic flow through intelligent transportation system and lighting upgrades.

“Gresham Smith looks forward to continuing our relationship with FDOT to implement technology-driven solutions that improve mobility throughout Florida,” commented Tyler Strickland, P.E., J.D., Florida state transportation leader, Gresham Smith. “By improving intelligent transportation systems and increasing pedestrian safety, we have a great opportunity to improve quality of life for residents within the context of their unique community.”

As a sub-consultant to Gannett Fleming, Inc., Gresham Smith will design improvements to the intelligent transportation system along a four-mile stretch of State Route 5 in Brevard County, from south of University Boulevard to north of Babcock Street. Fiber optic cables, fiber optic patch panels, ethernet switches, Bluetooth detection devices, advanced signal detection to implement Automated Traffic Signal Performance Metrics (ATSPM) and four new traffic cameras will support traffic and mobility management at FDOT traffic management centers.

Additionally, as a sub-consultant to Jacobs Engineering, Gresham Smith will evaluate and improve the signalized intersections on an approximately two-mile stretch of State Route 63, from 5th Street to Potter Woodberry Road, which serves as the main corridor through downtown Havana. The project team will determine whether video detection should be installed at any of the intersections and reconstruct pedestrian detectors in the intersections’ existing intelligent video surveillance system. Gresham Smith will also evaluate the route’s existing intersection lighting and recommend upgrades.

Gresham Smith is currently providing engineering services for transportation improvement projects throughout Florida, working in nearly all of FDOT’s seven districts. Covering a wide range of project types, the work includes resurfacing and pedestrian safety project in District 2, capacity, lighting and traffic operations upgrades in District 3, a transportation systems management and operations study in District 5, an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) design in District 6 and a districtwide access management and safety studies contract in District 7.
