Gresham Smith Designing Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute Expansion

August 17, 2021

Gresham Smith is excited to announce the firm has been selected to design the Tampa General Hospital (TGH) multi-disciplinary cancer institute expansion at the Brandon Healthplex facility. The 5,000-square-foot expansion and 9,000-square-foot renovation design will include 26 infusion bays, one linear accelerator vault with provisions for a second, a CT simulator, and design finishes centered on elevating care and protecting patient privacy.

Previously partnering with Gresham Smith to design the Brandon Healthplex facility in 2017, TGH has once again called on the firm to design a cohesive and functional oncology addition. Consolidating TGH’s oncology services into one facility, the new cancer institute will not only elevate the quality of patient care, but also create a state-of-the-art educational environment for surgeons, physicians and care providers to conduct cutting-edge research and analysis. The expanded facility will provide inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy and radiation therapy, chemoembolization, as well as infusion and surgical services. With more than 4,000 new cancer cases reported in the last year, the Tampa health system’s expanded footprint aims to meet growing demand in the community and serve as an innovation hub for oncology services.

“We have a long-standing relationship with Tampa General Hospital and we’re honored they called on our team once again to assist with the Brandon Healthplex expansion and renovation,” said Matt Harrell, AIA, LEED AP, Healthcare Market Vice President at Gresham Smith. “As a leader in the Healthcare field, our firm is dedicated to delivering design solutions centered around patient safety, quality of care, efficiency, and adaptability to the ever-changing healthcare landscape. We look forward to working with Tampa General Hospital to elevate the level of care for not only Tampa residents, but the oncology community as a whole.”

The expansion and renovation will mirror the modern aesthetic of the existing Brandon Healthplex facility. Aiming to create a warm and welcoming environment, the expansion will include ambient lighting, artistic wall coverings, and intricate artwork for patients to view while receiving treatment. To protect patient privacy and ensure comfortability, the design also incorporates frosted glass dividers in treatment bays and common areas.
