Gresham Smith is proud to announce the firm’s conceptual master plan study for the Clarks Landing development was honored with a Merit Award in the Planning & Analysis category from the Indiana Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA Indiana). The master plan reimagines the 45-acre site, with a design that honors the area’s historical narrative while creating space where people want to spend time. The project team was honored during a virtual awards ceremony on August 14.

“Clarks Landing presented a unique opportunity to revitalize an often-overlooked piece of land and create a live-work-play destination for the Clarksville community,” said Jessica Lucyshyn, P.E., executive vice president and market vice president of Land Planning, Gresham Smith. “This award exemplifies how strategic site planning can positively impact a community, creating an accessible lifestyle for all residents. I am proud that the project team has been recognized for their hard work.”

The 45-acre Clarks Landing site in southern Indiana sat dormant for more than two decades, previously serving as a state prison, a hospital and later a toothpaste manufacturing facility. With several old factory buildings and a portion of the original prison standing as the only reminder of the past, the site required a multifaceted approach to deliver an innovative and impactful master plan to benefit Clarksville residents. With a vision for an adaptive mixed-used community, Gresham Smith and Clarks Landing Enterprise Investments look to revitalize the area into a vibrant community featuring multifamily housing, retail, commercial attractions, hospitality and public gathering space.

The multi-disciplinary team of landscape architects, architects and engineers from Gresham Smith helped the client establish six guiding principles for the project, with a focus on access and authenticity. The project team also developed short- and long-term implementation strategies that honor the site’s historic nature. The team used a variety of site diagrams and photos to paint the picture of what Clarks Landing could be, leading live building tours which helped convey the design vision and highlight the client’s goals.

The ASLA Indiana Professional Design Awards provide a forum for the review and evaluation of work currently shaping the industry’s environment and highlight achievements in landscape architecture throughout the state of Indiana to a wide audience. This is the second ASLA Merit Award for the Clark’s Landing project, which was also recognized by the Kentucky Chapter of ASLA in May 2020.
