Gresham Smith Landscape Architecture Projects Honored with Merit Awards from ASLA Kentucky
Gresham Smith is proud to announce that for the eighth consecutive year, the firm has received awards from the Kentucky Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA Kentucky). Gresham Smith’s master plans for Bingham Park, the City of Danville’s downtown, and the Coldstream Industrial Park all received a Merit Award for Planning and Analysis, while the firm’s Parkland Plaza project was honored with a Merit Award for design in the Non-Constructed category. Gresham Smith staff accepted the awards at an April 1 ceremony held during ASLA Kentucky’s annual conference in Lexington.
“I am proud of our very talented team for their commitment to using landscape architecture, design and planning to connect people and spaces – reimagining sites to create a real sense of place,” said Land Planning Executive Vice President Jessica Lucyshyn, P.E. “As with all our work, these projects represent our strong dedication to community-based design, a key pillar of our practice. This awards program is an important recognition of the ways design can positively impact the community and it’s an honor to be recognized by our industry peers for these projects.”
Proudly known as the “City of Firsts,” Downtown Danville, Kentucky lost much of its energy over time due to slowed growth, as well as development moving toward large metropolitan centers. Gresham Smith co-led an eight-month planning process, engaging residents, business owners and institutional leaders to identify a strategic vision for moving downtown forward. With strong leadership from the city and input from diverse perspectives, the master plan is already positively impacting the city.
Gresham Smith is helping to transform an empty lot in the Parkland Neighborhood into a vibrant public space for people of all ages. With a playground for kids, open lawn seating, native landscaping, and space for community events, Parkland Plaza will allow residents to connect with their community.
Full of opportunity, the City of Lexington’s Coldstream Industrial Campus Master Plan creates a framework for innovative economic development on the 200-acre site and plans for new and improved connectivity to local roadways, trails, and greenways. Using Gresham Smith’s wide range of design, planning and infrastructure experience, the firm created a roadmap for a future industrial or business park that will spur economic development and improve the quality of life for the surrounding community.
Located just east of downtown Louisville and surrounded by the Clifton and Clifton-Heights neighborhoods, Bingham Park is an ever-present asset for several communities, but the facilities and amenities have not been updated since the 1970s. Louisville Parks and Recreation and Louisville Olmsted Parks Conservancy called on Gresham Smith to update the site. After extensive public engagement, the firm developed a comprehensive master plan that creates the framework for an accessible, equitable, and sustainable park.
The ASLA Kentucky Professional Design Awards provide a forum for the review and evaluation of work currently shaping the industry’s environment and highlight achievements in landscape architecture throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky to a wide audience. At the 2021 awards ceremony, Gresham Smith’s Chattahoochee RiverLands Greenway Study received a Merit Award in the Planning and Analysis category.
