Gresham Smith is proud to announce the firm’s recent contract with the City of Sandy Springs to provide engineering services for proposed roadway improvement projects along a one-mile stretch of Hammond Drive in North Atlanta. The heavily traveled corridor, which parallels Atlanta’s perimeter highway I-285, connects the congested Sandy Springs commercial district and the GA400 freeway corridor. The firm will present the City with design options focused on reducing congestion, addressing neighborhood concerns, adding facilities for bicyclists and pedestrians, increasing mobility and supporting economic development for the Sandy Springs community.

“The City of Sandy Springs is an active, vibrant neighborhood that draws visitors daily. Additional capacity, as well as designated space for pedestrians and cyclists, will make it easier for people to enjoy the shopping, dining and entertainment that the area has to offer,” said Jody Braswell, P.E., Georgia state transportation leader, Gresham Smith. “We look forward to helping the city connect people to the places they care about and are excited to work on this project.”

Hammond Drive is six lanes wide in the Perimeter Mall area, but quickly drops down to two lanes between Glenridge Road and Roswell Road. Gresham Smith’s design options will each concentrate on allowing traffic to better merge with the cars headed to and from the commercial district. The firm will also incorporate complete street and active transportation features, such as bicycle lanes, wide sidewalks and access to transit.
