Gresham Smith has been selected to design an expansion of a 2-mile section of a Boone County two-lane road to a five-lane route. The project is the culmination of the decades-long KY 237 expansion effort by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC),and will reconstruct the final portion of the 237 route between US 42 and KY 536.

Throughout the project area, KY 237 follows the South Fork of Gunpowder Creek, located west of KY 237. The reconstruction and widening of the Gunpowder Road portion of KY 237 from KY 536 (Mount Zion Road) to US 42 will improve safety and mobility through central Boone County, while also eliminating geometric deficiencies alone the roadway. The project will also reduce the frequency of flooding, which has overtopped portions of KY 237 in the project area in the past.

Currently, the project area is almost exclusively residential. The project will also improve pedestrian and bicycle safety by installing a multi-use trail along the improved roadway that will link nearby commercial developments, schools, parks and subdivisions.

“We’re looking forward to supporting KYTC and their mission of increasing safety and connectivity throughout the state of Kentucky,“ says Arlen Sandlin, P.E., Kentucky State Transportation Leader at Gresham Smith. “When complete, the project will deliver an asset to the local community, a destination for multimodal users and improvements to regional travel. We could not be more excited to assist District 6 in delivering this project.”
