Gresham Smith is proud to announce the firm has been selected by Taikang Community Investment Co., Ltd., to plan and design Taikang Ningbo Hospital and Continuing Care Retirement Community in Ningbo City, China. At nearly 3 million square feet, the facility will provide specialized healthcare, retirement living and retail in a prominent, convenient location along Bai Zhang Dong Lu, one of the city’s main highways. Gresham Smith’s competition-winning design is modern yet timeless and will enhance the surrounding community while becoming a landmark in Ningbo City.

“This flagship project for Taikang Community Investment Co. is an opportunity for us to help improve health and wellbeing in Ningbo City,” said Kevin K.S. Kim, AIA, senior vice president at Gresham Smith. “Our modern, refined design focuses on creating a memorable resident and patient experience and represents the level of care they can expect to receive at the facility. Our goal is to create a space that fosters long-term resident and patient relationships, supporting the organization’s mission to provide comprehensive care for an entire lifetime.”

The facility’s design is infused with nature and creates a calm, relaxing environment. The exterior will be clad in light stone and glass and will feature numerous balconies, green roofs and rooftop gardens. Once inside, residents and visitors will experience panoramic views of the city’s river park and the surrounding skyline as well as access to a central courtyard with a waterfall, reflecting pool and tea house.

Operational efficiency and privacy were also key considerations in the hospital’s design. The 400-bed hospital will link the emergency department, operating rooms, intensive care unit and patients rooms using separate vertical circulations for staff, patients and visitors. Dedicated trauma access will allow critical patients to receive care more quickly, while distributed support spaces and observation areas outside every ICU room enhance patient safety.

The continuing care retirement community was designed with mobility in mind and facilitates independent living within the community. The space includes multiple lounges for visiting with family members, a swimming pool, restaurants and a memory garden.

In addition to this new facility, Gresham Smith is currently working on several additional healthcare facilities in China including the Shanghai New Hongqiao International Medical Center Shared FacilityHuashan Hospital, Shanghai Lanhai Rehab Hospital and American-Sino Women’s Hospital.
