Gresham Smith is proud to announce that the firm has been selected to provide commissioning services, as well as conduct energy and water audits, for Virginia Polytechnic and State University. The services will improve utility usage, reduce operating and maintenance costs and improve indoor air quality for renovation and new construction projects across the University’s campus.

“As building operation technology continues to advance, and sustainability remains at the forefront of design, the need for commissioning continues to rise,” said Project Executive Johnathan Woodside, P.E., CEM, CxA, LEED AP O+M. “We are excited to partner with Virginia Tech and support them in designing a campus that will benefit the health and well-being of students, staff, and visitors.”

Under the contract, Gresham Smith will provide mechanical/electrical building system, lighting system, building enclosure and building automation control commissioning services, as well as water and energy audits, for a variety of individualized projects over a three-year period.

Gresham Smith’s commissioning team will evaluate existing systems and conditions, conduct design reviews, and develop and execute prefunctional and functional tests for major mechanical, electrical, plumbing and building enclosure systems. The team will also work closely with the University to identify opportunities for operational improvement while adhering to the University’s best practices and standards.

The firm recently completed an evaluation and proposed chilled water system modifications at one of the University’s central utility plants. These have resulted in improved performance and improved air quality in several residence halls.
