Gresham Smith to Design Broadway Viaduct Bridge Replacement

6月 22, 2021

Gresham Smith is excited to announce that it’s been selected by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) to design the Broadway Viaduct bridge replacement in downtown Nashville.

Serving as the main gateway into the city, an average of 26,000 vehicles drive daily across the bridge, which also spans 11th Avenue South, five active CSX railroad lines and two greenways. The bridge sits between the historic Union Station Hotel and the Nashville Yards development, and a pedestrian bridge is proposed to provide access from the Broadway Viaduct to a future urban pocket park that extends under the bridge.

The project will potentially be delivered under the construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) delivery method, and the bridge will be built using accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques to minimize the length of time it’s shut down to traffic. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2024. The firm will provide the following services: NEPA and permitting, roadway design, bridge design, utility coordination, lighting design and traffic analysis. Sub-consultants will provide surveying and geotechnical services along with scheduling and cost estimating services. More project information is available on TDOT’s website.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to deliver the design on this critical and complex piece of infrastructure development in the heart of Nashville,” said Andy Lucyshyn, P.E., PTOE, Middle Tennessee state transportation leader at Gresham Smith. “Our goal is to provide TDOT with cost-effective, innovative and time savings solutions to accelerate construction and minimize impacts to the public.”

The team is well-versed with both the CM/GC project delivery method and ABC techniques, having served as lead design engineering firm for TDOT’s “Fast Fix 8”—a $62 million interstate bridge rehabilitation project that was completed seven months ahead of schedule in which eight deteriorating bridges were replaced over 10 weekends. The firm received the American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee’s Grand Iris award for its work on Fast Fix 8 and has since designed many other ABC bridge projects for TDOT.
