Gresham Smith is proud to announce the firm’s recent contracts with the City of Atlanta to design two complete streets in the northeast and southwest parts of the city. The projects are part of the Renew Atlanta infrastructure improvement program, supporting the City’s goal of making streets safe and inviting for all modes of transportation.

“These projects are catalysts for creating vibrant, livable neighborhoods and will make it easier for people to move around the City of Atlanta, no matter their age, socioeconomic background or physical abilities,” commented Bert Kuyrkendall, P.E., AICP, senior engineer and planner at Gresham Smith. “The Renew Atlanta program represents a major investment in Atlanta’s infrastructure and will benefit the booming city for decades to come. Gresham Smith is proud to be a part of this effort.”

The firm is working closely with neighborhood residents and other stakeholders to transform a nearly one-mile stretch of the Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard residential corridor and a one-mile segment of the North Avenue residential corridor into walkable, bikeable, transit-friendly neighborhood connectors. Project elements include bike lanes, mid-block pedestrian crossings, upgraded pedestrian lighting and ADA-accessible sidewalks and ramps, as well as new street paving and striping and landscaped infiltration beds for stormwater runoff.

Additionally, improvements to Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard will connect pedestrians to the neighborhood’s MARTA station, which provides rapid rail transit through downtown, as well as bus stops along the corridor. The North Avenue project will connect residents from the city’s Freedom Park Trail to the Eastside Beltline Trail.
