Gresham Smith to Design Drainage Improvements Along South Dale Mabry Highway

In an effort to address flooding issues along South Dale Mabry Highway in the City of Tampa, Gresham Smith has begun work to design drainage and safety improvements.

Gresham Smith was selected by the Florida Department of Transportation last year to design this critical regional project. The goal is to address a number of safety issues including flooding on the five-lane undivided highway between Neptune Street and Henderson Boulevard. This project, which covers a quarter-mile section of the highway, is part of a larger systemwide drainage improvement project jointly coordinated by FDOT, the City of Tampa and Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) that will greatly decrease flooding by adding capacity to the existing drainage system.

In addition to drainage improvements, other improvements include complete streets design and upgrading traffic elements such as replacing signal heads, revising crosswalks and lighting the intersections at Neptune Street and Henderson Boulevard, which will significantly increase safety for vehicular traffic, bicyclists and pedestrians. Design is being led by Senior Project Manager Mark Gillette, and it’s expected to be complete by early 2021. Construction should begin in the summer of 2021.

“This is a critical infrastructure project along this major highway in Tampa, and we’re proud to bring our expertise to serve FDOT,” said Tyler Strickland, P.E., Florida state transportation leader at Gresham Smith. “The design improvements will address the severe flooding issues this area has been dealing with for several years and make this a safer part of the highway.”

Gresham Smith’s transportation professionals deliver comprehensive management, planning, design, environmental, and construction phase services for highway, transit, aviation and rail facilities throughout the Southeast.
