Gresham Smith to Design Ultium Cells Battery Plant in Tennessee
Gresham Smith is excited to be selected to design the new Ultium Cells battery plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee.
Ultium Cells, a joint venture of LG Energy Solution and General Motors, is investing $2.3 billion into a 2.8 million square-foot battery plant. It will create 1,300 new jobs and supply Ultium battery cells to GM’s Spring Hill manufacturing assembly plant, which will build the Cadillac LYRIQ. The plant is scheduled to open in late 2023 and will use an advanced and efficient battery cell manufacturing processes.

Gresham Smith began working with Ultium Cells in 2019 on its first battery plant in Lordstown, Ohio. Scheduled to open in 2022, the $2.3 billion, 2.8 million square-foot Lordstown facility will be the largest battery plant of its kind in the United States, producing an annual capacity of more than 30 gigawatt hours with room to grow.
The Spring Hill facility will be a similar size, allowing Ultium Cells to double its battery production. Gresham Smith is delivering a full suite of design services as well as engineering and commissioning via the integrated project delivery method.
