Gresham Smith has been selected to provide retro-commissioning services for Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, a 360-bed non-profit hospital in Athens, Georgia. A critical part of the community for 80 years, the hospital has undergone multiple renovations in order to keep pace with patient and staff needs. Gresham Smith’s commissioning agents will take a look at the variety of air handlers being used to ventilate the 980,000 square-foot facility to see if and how adjustments could be made to improve facility operations. The goal: optimized performance for energy efficiency, improved indoor air quality and a healthier environment for patients, visitors and staff alike.

“Even the best designed building systems need to press the restart button every now and then,” said Steven Metzgar, CxA, LEED AP BD+C, EMP, EPA, senior commissioning authority at Gresham Smith. “We look forward to working with the Piedmont Athens Regional team to do a comprehensive audit to assess the performance of their air handlers. The facility has changed significantly over its history, and with some fine-tuning we can help identify and make adjustments to their HVAC system that will benefit building occupant comfort and the healthcare provider’s bottom line.”

The project team will take a phased approach to retro-commissioning the facility’s air systems. After meeting with Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center maintenance and operations staff to establish project goals and collecting all relevant equipment drawings, Gresham Smith will begin inspecting the air handlers in critical areas such as operating rooms, critical care units and the neonatal intensive care unit. Based on their findings, the team will either reset equipment to its original performance settings or continue to optimize the air systems for energy performance.
