The Gulf States Region of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has awarded Gresham Smith an Honor Citation Award in the New Construction category for its design work on the Nashville Food Project headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee. The award was announced at a virtual ceremony held on September 10, 2020.

The Nashville Food Project is a unique non-profit providing home-cooked meals and organically grown food to Nashvillians in need. The organization had outgrown their existing location and called on Gresham Smith to design a headquarters that meets the needs of staff and volunteers. The project called for a unique 5,900-square-foot headquarters featuring office space, a commercial kitchen, and community dining space. The new headquarters supports Nashville Food Project’s mission of sharing nourishing food and advances the organization’s goals of cultivating community and feeding those in need.

“We’re honored to be recognized by AIA Gulf States for this project, as it is an impactful and innovative space for the Nashville community,” said Chris Hoal, AIA, architect at Gresham Smith. “A key factor in the design was incorporating a sense of home. The traditional house shape was used to signify that all are welcome and that the Nashville Food Project can serve as refuge to those in need.”

Gresham Smith provided architecture, interior design, surveying, civil engineering and mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) engineering services for this project.

The AIA Design Awards are held annually, recognizing projects for their exceptional choices in lighting, materials, color and planes, sustainability, and overall design excellence. Respected jury members choose projects from those entered by architects practicing in the Gulf States region. The honors program identifies built works of distinction and strives to promote the excellent work by architects from Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.
