Gresham Smith is proud to announce that Senior Transportation Engineer John Eckler, P.E., has been appointed to the Federal Highway Administration’s Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM) Steering Committee. As one of 10 consultants from across the United States selected to the 19-person committee, Eckler will support the development and use of tools, such as the IHSDM, for evaluating and designing safe highways.

“By encouraging transportation professionals to use the IHSDM software analysis tools, we are promoting a smoother, more data-driven process for designing safe, operationally efficient highways,” commented Eckler. “As an organization we are committed to finding better ways to move people and products. I look forward to using my knowledge and experience to help create new industry standards that will ultimately elevate and improve how roadway design decisions are made across the country.”

Eckler joined Gresham Smith in 2011 and has more than 20 years of experience designing safe, efficient roadways across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He is currently working on the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Statewide Highway Safety Improvement Program, performing roadway analysis for departure corridors and high crash intersection locations.

The Interactive Safety Highway Design Model is a suite of software analysis tools used to evaluate design decisions on existing or proposed highway designs. By estimating a highway design’s expected safety and operational performance, the software helps transportation professionals make informed design decisions.
