Gresham Smith’s Mary Clayton Appointed to N.C. Turnpike Authority Board

March 9, 2020

Gresham Smith’s North Carolina State Transportation Leader Mary Clayton has been appointed to the board of the N.C. Turnpike Authority by Gov. Roy Cooper.

To help keep pace with the transportation needs of the state, the N.C. Turnpike Authority plays a critical role in the N.C. Department of Transportation’s operations by studying, planning, developing and building toll roads as well as operating and maintaining them.

Clayton is one of nine members of the board, and she will join the operations committee. She will serve a two-year term.

“We’re thrilled to have Mary join our board,” said James “J.J.” Edens, executive director of the N.C. Turnpike Authority. “She brings a wealth of industry experience to the Authority that we’ll need going forward as we tackle the state’s growing list of transportation needs.”

Since 2002, the Turnpike Authority has worked to advance toll facilities to help give drivers more choices in how they reach critical destinations while also reducing congestion along heavily traveled routes and providing an additional revenue stream for building new commuter routes.

In December 2012, North Carolina’s first modern toll road, the Triangle Expressway, opened as a six-lane toll road that utilizes all-electronic tolling technology while improving regional mobility and setting the stage for future tolling projects in North Carolina. Several other projects are currently in the planning and development stages or are under construction.

“Mary has more than three decades of experience in transportation infrastructure, planning and land development, particularly as it relates to transportation demand management,” said Kent Black, executive vice president of Transportation at Gresham Smith. “She’s a perfect fit to help North Carolina develop transportation solutions to meet the state’s growing population and congestion.”
