July 29, 2019

Gresham Smith announces that Matt D’Angelo, P.E., has been tapped as the firm’s new Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O) Practice Leader. He brings more than 20 years of experience to Gresham Smith, having most recently served as a vice president at Atkins. There he provided strategic counsel for state DOTs, toll agencies, and the Federal Highway Administration on innovative Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and traffic engineering programs across the country. As TSM&O Practice Leader at Gresham Smith, D’Angelo will lead strategy for the firm’s rapidly growing service line dedicated to improving safety, mobility and reliability for all transportation users. The role was previously held by Andy Lucyshyn, P.E., PTOE, who was promoted to Gresham Smith’s Middle Tennessee Area Transportation Leader in May.

“Matt brings unparalleled insight into the opportunities and challenges associated with emerging transportation solutions and the rise of connectivity and automation in transportation projects,” said Kent Black, P.E., executive vice president at Gresham Smith. “He is also a strong and experienced leader who I’m confident will excel in growing Gresham Smith’s TSM&O team. In cities and states across the Southeast, our firm has already established itself as innovators with a diverse background in developing cost effective and impactful solutions, and we look forward to the continued progress we’ll be able to make with Matt’s direction.”

“One of my strengths is my ability to help make technical ideas accessible to a non-technical audience, as well as my ability to bring people together for successful teams and projects,” commented D’Angelo. “TSM&O is an exceptionally exciting field to be in right now, as we’re just beginning to recognize the untapped potential for implementing these types of strategies to help bring about physical, mental and environmental change for people and communities across the country.”

D’Angelo is a nationally recognized leader in ITS, actively supporting the Intelligent Transportation Society of America with a previous role as program chair for the 2013 annual meeting and as Board Member of the Tennessee State Chapter. He has also been a member of the Virginia, Carolinas, Florida and Texas Chapters. Additionally, D’Angelo is an active supporter of the OmniAir Consortium, which is building the certification framework for vehicle connectivity with infrastructure. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Transportation Systems, both from the University of Central Florida.

Gresham Smith’s Transportation professionals deliver comprehensive planning, design, environmental, architectural and construction phase services for highway, transit, aviation and rail facilities throughout the Southeast. The staff of engineers, planners and scientists capitalize on the firm’s diverse blend of markets and disciplines to offer a truly integrated and sustainable approach that considers all perspectives and offers practical, forward-thinking solutions.
