Gresham, Smith and Partners announces that Karl Smith, P.E., AICP, has joined GS&P as senior transportation planner in the firm’s Alpharetta office. He brings more than 16 years of experience in public-sector transportation, transit and land use planning projects, having collaborated with numerous state departments of transportation, municipal clients and transit agencies. At GS&P, Smith will support the continued expansion of planning services as well as successful project delivery for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and other clients throughout the state.

“Karl’s broad experience in Georgia and across the country affords him a well-rounded understanding of our region’s planning and transit needs, as well as the most effective solutions,” said Kent Black, P.E., executive vice president at Gresham, Smith and Partners. “He believes in a true multi-modal approach to mobility and congestion challenges, and he knows that simply building roads is not enough. Having worked on both the client side and the consultant side, he recognizes that it takes collaboration, communication and a shared vision to achieve goals. We are very pleased to welcome Karl to our team.”

“As populations continue to grow and travel patterns evolve, there’s an immediate need to identify innovative ways to address our transportation needs,” commented Smith. “Our job as planners and engineers is much more than getting people from point A to point B; it’s our duty to continually seek out the best, safest transportation options and introduce them to our communities. I’m excited to get to work for GS&P’s clients, helping them achieve their goals.”

Prior to joining GS&P, Smith served as a senior transit project manager for Gude Management Group in Atlanta. He was part of the project management team for the multi-million-dollar general engineering contract for capital projects on the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) heavy-rail system. Smith was also a senior transit planner for HDR in Atlanta, where he developed operating plans for numerous high-capacity transit improvement projects including streetcar, light rail and bus rapid transit, and a transportation planner for CHA in Atlanta, having led extensive data collection for rural transit agencies on behalf of GDOT, in support of a rural transit funding program. He is an active member of the American Planning Association and the Georgia Transit Association (GTA), for which he currently serves as the statewide chairman for the Transit Plan Task Force committee. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Connecticut in Storrs.

GS&P’s Transportation professionals deliver comprehensive planning, design, environmental, architectural and construction phase services for highway, transit, aviation and rail facilities throughout the Southeast. The staff of engineers, planners and scientists capitalize on the firm’s diverse blend of markets and disciplines to offer a truly integrated and sustainable approach that considers all perspectives and offers practical, forward-thinking solutions.

“Karl believes in a true multi-modal approach to mobility and congestion challenges, and he knows that simply building roads is not enough. Having worked on both the client side and the consultant side, he recognizes that it takes collaboration, communication and a shared vision to achieve goals.”
