Gresham, Smith and Partners is proud to announce that construction is underway for GS&P-designed roadway improvement projects in Jackson, Tenn. The $67 million construction project, which is expected to complete in 2021, will provide improved safety and access for Jackson residents and commuters on Interstate 40 and the U.S. 45 Bypass, as well as better connectivity to the city’s historic downtown.

“We are proud to have been selected to lead the design and engineering for these important interchange and roadway improvements to Interstate 40 and the U.S. 45 Bypass in Jackson,” commented Cody Crews, P.E., ENV SP, senior transportation engineer, Gresham, Smith and Partners. “GS&P has partnered with TDOT for many years and we look forward to continuing that partnership as we develop a design solution that will improve the traveller experience for commuters on I-40 as well as residents and visitors in the Jackson community.”

GS&P’s design calls for the widening of a 2.9-mile section of Interstate 40 from four to six lanes from west of the U.S. 45 Bypass to east of North Highland Avenue (U.S. 45), as well as the improvement of the U.S. 45 Bypass from Old Hickory Boulevard to the I-40 interchange. The design also calls for the reconstruction of two interchanges, as well as the replacement of both the U.S. 45 Bypass bridge over I-40 and the I-40 bridges over North Highland Avenue to create a single point urban interchange, which will provide a gateway entrance to the historic city of Jackson. The intersection of the U.S. 45 Bypass and Casey Jones Lane will also be reconfigured to increase safety and provide improved access to local businesses and attractions.

GS&P has designed numerous TDOT transportation across the state of Tennessee, including Fast Fix 8, a $62 million bridge rehabilitation project that replaced four pairs of bridges along I-40 in downtown Nashville, and the Interstate 40/State Route 66 Diverging Diamond Interchange in Knoxville. GS&P’s Transportation professionals deliver comprehensive planning, design, environmental, architectural and construction phase services for highway, transit, aviation and rail facilities throughout the Southeast.  The staff of engineers, planners and scientists capitalize on the firm’s diverse blend of markets and disciplines to offer a truly integrated and sustainable approach that considers all perspectives and offers practical, forward-thinking solutions.
