Gresham, Smith and Partners is providing traffic analysis, transportation design and traffic engineering services for the North Fulton Community Improvement District in Alpharetta. The GS&P design calls for widening of the Georgia 400 Northbound exit ramp to accommodate three left turn lanes onto Windward Parkway, a heavily traveled highway in the North Fulton community. The design also calls for the widening of Windward Parkway to Deerfield Parkway to provide ample room for the triple left turn movement. Additionally, the project team will add dual left turn lanes to Windward Parkway to allow improved access to Westside Parkway.

“Windward Parkway is a heavily travelled corridor, with numerous neighborhoods, businesses and several large corporate headquarters along the route,” commented Scott Shelton, P.E., senior transportation engineer at Gresham, Smith and Partners. “Triple left turn lanes are still relatively new, but we feel this solution will work well for the area’s high volume of traffic. We look forward to making the North Fulton community more commuter friendly during peak traffic hours so that businesses along Windward are easily accessible and trip times are reduced.”

GS&P completed field surveys before developing a conceptual layout, a traffic signal plan, a utility plan, stomwater reports, traffic analysis and the final roadway design. The project team is also collaborating with sub consultant Edwards-Pitman, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to provide environmental documentation services to support compliance with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) guidelines. To minimize the impact on the surrounding community, the team developed right of way and access accommodation plans, utilized asymmetrical widening and coordinated with property owners.
