Gresham, Smith and Partners is pleased to announce the completion and grand opening of LifeWay Christian Resources’ new corporate headquarters in downtown Nashville. GS&P provided architecture, interior design, branded environments and workplace strategy services for the 277,000-square-foot space located on 2.5 acres in the Capitol View development. At more than 125 years old, LifeWay is one of the largest providers of Christian resources in the world. The decision to relocate from their previous historic campus to a dynamic new nine-story facility is part of a larger rebranding and restructuring strategy by LifeWay. It will be home to approximately 1,100 of the company’s local employees. LifeWay leaders and employees joined project partners and supporters at a grand opening ceremony on November 27.

“There has been a sea change in the publishing industry, as trends have shifted away from print materials and toward digital resources,” commented Thom S. Rainer, president and CEO, LifeWay Christian Resources. “Our new headquarters propels us forward in this new era, as an innovative company in an efficient space that provides our employees with the spiritual and creative inspiration they need to do their important work. It also renews our commitment to downtown Nashville and contributes to a safer, greener, more walkable urban core. We are very pleased with the timeless space GS&P has created for us.”

“Our team has been tremendously impressed by the courage LifeWay has shown in essentially reinventing themselves and embracing a new business model,” said Steve Johnson, AIA, NCARB, executive vice president at Gresham, Smith and Partners. “They have adapted and evolved without ever losing sight of their purpose and their history, which is difficult to do. As designers, our job for LifeWay was complex but rewarding. We created a high-quality, timeless and flexible space that can evolve with them over the years. It celebrates their corporate culture and honors the core beliefs that will always be at their foundation, while introducing the new spaces and tools they need to remain at the top of their industry into the future.”

GS&P worked closely with LifeWay leadership to develop workplace strategies that support effective business practices and make it easier for employees to collaborate. The new headquarters features an open floorplan geared toward activity-based working. It includes a conference space large enough to accommodate approximately 700 people with theater-style seating and pre-function/breakout spaces. Lifeway's Christian values are present throughout the space in features such as a Scripture passage serving as a backdrop to the monumental stair taking visitors to the conference level, and the eight relocated stained glass parable story panels, which are suspended in custom steel frames in the two-story lobby. The LifeWay story – past, present and future – is clearly communicated through the use of both historical elements and modern video technology. Warm, welcoming materials and abundant natural light create a positive, energetic environment.

GS&P’s Corporate and Urban Design expertise has been honed with decades of project experience and continues to be a cornerstone service. The firm’s recent workplace projects include a 204,000-square-foot corporate headquarters and 15,000-square-foot connector in Franklin, Tenn., for Ramsey Solutions, the award-winning 16-story 1100 Charlotte Avenue office tower and the new 16,000-square-foot Center for Medical Interoperability interior buildout, both in Nashville, Tenn.

“Our new headquarters propels us forward in this new era, as an innovative company in an efficient space that provides our employees with the spiritual and creative inspiration they need to do their important work.”
