Rugel Chiriboga Joins Gresham Smith as Project Executive in Charlotte

Accomplished Architect and Urban Designer Rugel Chiriboga, AIA, NCARB, LEED BD+C, has joined Gresham Smith’s Corporate + Urban Design market as a Project Executive and Studio Design Leader in the firm’s Charlotte office.

Rugel brings more than 25 years of leadership experience in design, and management of architectural design processes and development methods including public-private partnerships. He is dedicated to enhancing project performance and exceeding client expectations by orchestrating the right mix of expertise, creativity and innovation in pursuit of design excellence. Having led international teams of architects, designers, and multidisciplinary partners in creating remarkable environments across the globe, Rugel specializes in the design of urban, commercial mixed-use architecture, healthcare and infrastructure projects.

“Rugel brings extensive experience with large-scale mixed-use projects with a multitude of components, including office, residential, hospitality, higher education, healthcare and sports/multi-purpose event facilities,” said Don Reynolds, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Executive Vice President of Corporate + Urban Design at Gresham Smith. “With his impressive design background and resume, he is a great complement to our growing mixed-use practice in Charlotte.”

Rugel joins Gresham Smith from Charlotte-based Odell Associates, where he served as Principal leading the firm’s mixed-use practice. Prior to that, he held design leadership positions with notable firms including Skidmore, Owings & Merrill as an Associate and Senior Designer, and Little Diversified Architectural Consulting as Partner and Director of Design.

He’s worked on a number of high-profile projects, including:

  • The QueensPark master plan – Charlotte
  • Tidewater Landing Soccer Stadium and Mixed Use – Pawtucket, Rhode Island
  • The Eastland Mall redevelopment master plan – Charlotte
  • Medic Ser Clinica Delgado Hospital – Miraflores, Lima, Peru
  • Jinan Greenland Exposition Center – Jinan, China
  • XianTao Big Data Valley – Chongqing, China
  • Phipps Tower – Atlanta, Georgia

He received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Notre Dame and his Master of Professional Studies in Real Estate Development from Georgetown University. Fluent in both English and Spanish, he’s a member of the American Institute of Architects and the National Council of Architectural Registration Board.

Outside of the office, Rugel enjoys traveling and being active in the Charlotte community where he lives with his wife and two young sons. He serves on the board of the Friends of QueensPark and shares a passion for extending a collaborative design culture and a commitment to delivering exceptional value to clients and communities we serve.
