To meet the needs of a growing Lake County community, enable flexibility for the future and increase connectivity to the larger network, AdventHealth Waterman selected Gresham Smith to provide architectural and engineering services to add a four-story patient to the existing hospital. The addition expands the emergency department, relocates the OB and pediatric services and provides shell space for future medical and surgical units.

Flexibility to Support a Growing Community

Flexibility to Support a Growing Community

The new tower provides the increased capacity the hospital needs in order to better serve the growing community, growing the hospital from 269 beds to 287. Adaptability and resilience are inherent in the design to provide flexibility now and in the future. The emergency department design creates efficient expansion and contraction scenarios, including a fourth floor of shell space and structural support for two additional future floors.

Designing for Efficiency and Connectivity

The project supports a strategic goal of increasing integration within the hospital system. It improves connectivity physically and electronically. A new corridor joins the main hospital entrance and ED entrance, which also aims to ease wayfinding for patients. The design also promotes clinical collaboration staging physician work areas in a centralized location improving staff experience and quality of care.

Patient Experience and Space for Expanded Services

The tower was designed to complement the existing, beautiful campus as well as maximize daylight and views of the campus’ lake to enhance the patient experience. The new 38-bed ED is housed on the first floor and has a dedicated entrance to support intuitive wayfinding. When additional renovation work is complete, the emergency department will accommodate 58 beds. The tower’s second floor is home to to the Center for Women and Children which includes gynecology, labor and delivery, postpartum care and inpatient pediatrics. The pediatric exam and patient rooms incorporate an “Under the Sea” theme to connect to the AdventHealth network of care. The third floor, still under construction, will house a new service line, inpatient rehabilitation, and the fourth floor is shelled for future expansion with structural support for two additional future floors.
