More than one million travelers pass through Blue Grass Airport on an annual basis, and this number is expected to increase steadily over the coming years. LEX needed a design consultant that could lead it through the needed changes that would allow the airport to meet the challenges of an expanding customer base.

For more than a decade, Gresham Smith has partnered with LEX to help them provide the best service and travel experience possible to their passengers. This has involved a series of improvements that are both aesthetic and functional, and are linked to the airport’s long-term plan for growth. LEX’s master plan anticipates continued increases in the volumes of passengers, vehicles and cargo moving in and out of the airport, and Gresham Smith has assisted in planning and development to meet the growth of each.

In the beginning, Gresham Smith designed and oversaw the conversion of six independent manual baggage make-up systems into one fully automatic system with two in-line CTX 5500 Explosive Detection System devices and four Electronic Trace Detection stations to help the airport comply with federal mandates. For the airport’s most recent improvements, we provided planning, program definition, design, budget estimates, construction phasing and construction administration services for a series of terminal renovations. Other projects included a concourse addition, public parking structure, air cargo building, rental car structure, ramp addition and upgraded curbside signage.

The overall campus improvements have provided a more pleasant passenger experience that is visually appealing, with an aesthetic that is more reflective of the area and more updated. The facilities are also energy efficient and comply with current security screening guidelines, providing cost savings for the airport and a higher level of service and convenience for passengers.
