Located in South Miami, Innovative Cancer Institute (ICI) provides cutting-edge radiation oncology treatment to patients from across the globe. To accommodate their growing patient population and incorporate additional technologies, ICI called on Gresham Smith to design a new cancer treatment facility. At more than 60,000-square-feet and four stories, the Center for Innovative Medicine offers state-of-the-art cancer care in a positive, healing environment.

A Challenging Site
The site itself was one of our team’s biggest challenges. The property, which had been purchased before we came on board, was a tight squeeze for the space ICI needed. Due to the site’s limits, there was no room to meet the City of South Miami’s parking requirements. Our solution? Place parking on the second, third and fourth floors and turn the access ramp into an architectural feature.
Saving Space to Accommodate Technology
We were also able to maximize space by working with Veritas Medical Solutions to plan for radiation -shielded treatment vaults constructed with VeriShieldTM modular blocks – a space-saving alternative to solid concrete materials. Inside the treatment vaults are some of the world’s most advanced radiotherapy and radiosurgery technologies.
An Inspired, Modern Facility
Gresham Smith’s eye-catching design was inspired by the power of the Center’s state-of-the-art technology. On the exterior our team used modern metal panels and a smooth white stucco finish, while inside we used aluminum classing, decorative metal screens, translucent glazing, glass and warm wood tones to create a comfortable, clutter-free space that alleviates stress.Gallery
