Li-Cycle Battery Recycling Plant

Alongside Ultium Cells’ $2.3 billion lithium-ion battery plant in Ohio, Gresham Smith is also designing a 120,000-square-foot battery recycling plant that will be operated by Li-Cycle, an industry leader in lithium-ion battery resource recovery. Li-Cycle will use its recycling technology to transform up to 100% of Ultium Cells’ battery manufacturing scrap into new battery-grade materials. This facility will be Li-Cycle’s sixth and largest facility that will have the capacity to process approximately 16,000 tons of battery manufacturing scrap and battery materials per year. The primary output product will be black mass, a powder-like substance consisting of a number of highly valuable materials, including lithium, cobalt and nickel, which Li-Cycle will convert into battery grade materials.
